I feel sorry for people who are over familiar with religious literature like "The Divine Comedy" or "Paradise Lost" and think by these they know what the revelation of God in the Bible has said.
Why don't you start reading the Gospel of Matthew (say three chapters a day) and read through to the end of say John for some grounding in the word first?
Don't be lazy. You should enjoy reading if you come as to a Heavenly Father with a willingness for God to touch your heart, perhaps change you mind about a few things.
Read for inner nourishment of your spirit. Read to draw close in your heart to Jesus Christ.

That being said, it is the CHRISTIAN thing to do... turn the other cheek and help those in need of help... who am I but a meagre peasant trying to save those who don't know they need saving... Surely my father would love me for my self sacrifice in this?
