Not really. We were postwar country kids, used to making our own amusements, toys, gifts for others. We weren't exposed to commercials or merchandising at all.

I may have misunderstood.

I may also have misunderstood my mother who I believe told me not to accept sweets when offered outside. I remember hiding it under a wooden plank - a piece of licorice - hoping to find it the next morning but it was gone... 🙂
