    On this day in 2012...

Colin Farmer, a 61 year old blind stroke victim was shot in the back in Chorley town centre with a 50,000-volt Taser stun-gun fired by a police officer who mistook his white stick for a Samurai sword.

On this date in 1781, British General Charles Cornwallis surrendered his army of some 8,000 men to General George Washington at Yorktown, giving up any chance of winning the Revolutionary War. Cornwallis had marched his army into the Virginia port town earlier that summer expecting to meet British ships sent from New York. The ships never arrived.

"I hate when that happens," Cornwallis told reporters.

Actually the ships did arrive but the French moved their ships between them the shore . Not wanting to declare war on the French the English ships did not attempt to land .

'Brown Monday' on the London Stock Exchange with £10 billion being wiped off the value of shares after British Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown failed to clarify his Government's stance on the European single currency.

    Beat me to it.

“England expects...” was the signal raised from HMS Victory shortly before kick off. The victory gave Britain naval supremacy until the 1900s.

HMS Victory is restored and preserved in dry dock at Portsmouth and is well worth a visit.
