Best known for his work with Coltrane and a long solo career, he was highly innovative in his playing. His chordwork is well-known and he was known for preferring acoustic pianos, only rarely using electronic keyboards. He often reminded me of Oscar Peterson. An NEA Jazz Master, he was highly influential, and highly prolific - his body of work is huge. I was sad to hear of his passing. The jazz world has lost another truly great musician.
