may have.. put i remember him from when he was playing for Arsenal in the 70s. decent keeper i thought.

England have always had great keepers over the years, but recently i feel the standard has dropped a bit.

...that's probably because young keepers are being kept out 'cos it's en vogue to have an average foreign bloke between the sticks... Van Der Sar, Reina, Niemi, and the ones at Boro and Villa to name a few!

For decades England has produced the best keepers in the world, and you know it.
Banks, Shilton, Clemence, Parkes, Seaman, Robinson...

Please try to base your inane comments on FACT in the future.

And Fulham had two of them! Van der Sar was brilliant. Niemi, less so, but still good enough.

Villa = Thomas Sorenson

Boro = Mark Schwarzer

He's quality.

Crita,

Many thans for jogging my memory on the Villa and Boro keepers... but come on? Surely you're not serious about old Calamity James are you?

One good half of a season does not make up for 10 poor ones!

No worries.

I honestly rate James as one of the best keepers in the Prem. When he's in form, he's nearly unbeatable. He's being doing great for Portsmouth this season.

I think he suffered from nerves/stage fright playing for England and it's definitely a confidence thing with him, but like I said, if he's playing well, he's top class.

Granted, I haven't seen much of his earlier career, but he's closing in on the most apperances in the Prem (I think he's 4th behind Alan Shearer, Gary Speed and Andy Cole) and you can't do that unless you've got the skills to keep getting picked.

My inane comments are based on facts, my dear simpleton.

The same fact that you still climb to goalkeepers of the far past proves my point............by the way............Seaman?
Shilton? Robinson? best keepers in the world?

Are you joking, right?

I have to say, I don't at all rate Seaman or Robinson.

Beside the fact he plays for Spurs, he's rubbish. Although he is good at making it look like every goal scored against him was unstoppable. I'm yet to figure out how he does that.....

OK I concede that Robbo still has something to prove... but I cannot accept question marks after the names of Shilton and Seaman...

Shilton was Banks' understudy at Leicester City, he commanded his area and was an excellent shot-stopper. He gave a very ordinary Forest defence the confidence to go and win 2 European Cups.
The only down side to Shilts was the fact that he should've stepped down from top flight football 2 years earlier than he did...

Seaman was England's number 1 for yonks. Never dramatic, never the showman, never played to the cameras like so many continental keepers do.
He was another who was so reliable he made the defenders in front of him so confident, they punched above their weight for years (Bould, Dixon, and Winterburn particularly.)
Only down side to Seaman was that ridiculous ponytail!

And the porn star mo!

My estimation of him went through the floor when he got lobbed by Ronaldinho in the World cup.

Inexcusable.

I don't care what Mr Ed said about that goal.... it was a cross, and a fluke.

Excusable.... but depressingly disappointing!!!

Perhaps, and most likely correct, but I reckon I would have saved that!

First thing you learn - don't get beaten at your near post and don't get chipped.

But, I sense myself being a little bit hypocritcal here - earlier I was saying David James was really a good keeper despite some disasters, so I guess I should concede that Seaman is in the same boat.

Peter Schmeichel.

No question.

He won the European Championship and kept the Germans at bay single-handedly in the final.

Also did the "impossible" treble with Man U in 1999.
Stupendously good.

Notice on 2:17, his save from the header, better IMO than Banks' 'impossible' save from Pele's header, because it was lower and harder.
Anyway, you can judge for yourseles:

Here we see his brilliant save from Bergkamp in the 1999 FA cup semi final reply. Joyous times indeed. (2:27)

He is allowed the odd mistake:
