Jesus said that there were people who would be alive when he returned . The people he was referring to were those who were listening to him as he spoke those words . Either he was a liar or there are some 2000 year old people still around .

He also told his disciples that he wasn't going to a feast (or some such event) but then went anyway in secret.

Let’s get the scripture up so we can see what we’re talking about:

For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done. Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.
    Matthew 16: 27/28

Many commentators say that Jesus was referring to his transfiguration.

Hey-up, a thumb down for quoting a scripture.

    Tough crowd.

That is rather a lame explanation from those commentators. Transfiguration cannot remotely be equivalent to him returning in his Kingdom.

You’re one for the words of Jesus, so what do you think he meant?

He didn't go with them but went later, that isn't lying.

Yeah and there are times there is no rational explanation. This is one of those times. So rather than come up with a ridiculous explanation where people will laugh at you, it is better to say " I really do not know, what Jesus meant there "

There is no requirement to understand everything in the bible.

I think you need to revisit the text.
