The ambiguity was deliberate.
Either way I do not remember him being the butt of any jokes.

The on-going "joke" was that everyone treated him as
normal, as normal as people coming in with limbs
hanging off and their guts hanging out.
No, it was not ambiguous. You simply have not seen as many shows as I have.

It was trying to get a section 8 discharge from the army for having a mental disorder. If you watch the series you will know I am right.

Section 8 is a category of discharge from the United States military, used for a service member judged mentally unfit for service. Section 8 was also often given to cross-dressers, homosexual, bisexual and transgender people.[1]

Section 8 became a household phrase when used in the 1970s TV series M*A*S*H, in which the character Corporal Klinger was continually seeking one (until he eventually abandoned his efforts).[5] His preferred method of doing so was cross-dressing.[6][7]

I wonder if people who post here are this ignorant or simply unwilling to see the truth.

I'm pretty sure I have not missed an episode though it was some time ago.
Sometimes Klinger enjoyed dressing-up ... there was ambiguity there.

And if you are so opinionated why did you ask the question? Silliness.

You're the only one who had to look up a Section 8 discharge on wikipedia.

No, I knew what it meant. I just found it so you could not deny it. You had denied he was dressing up as an act to get a mental disorder discharge. You cannot deny it now.

I never denied it you idiot.
What is your problem?

Yes you did, but now it is done.

Would a show be allowed today where a man wearing dresses is considered a mental disorder?

"Allowed" by who? For what reason would you want to make such a show?

The show was made. Why make one that does? To be historically accurate?

All I said is that MASH would never be released today.

So what?

It was satirizing attitudes. Was Klinger thrown out of the army for a "mental disorder"? No, he wasn't. M*A*S*H was akin to Catch 22.

Do you think a show that considers cross dressing a mental disorder would be released today?

It was satirizing contemporary norms and attitudes. Why would you want to make a show with such a story element today? What would would you see yourself as satirizing?
