Just been reading the last few posts from Phil and Trev...
This is one of the things I love about football...I can't believe how opinions can vary so much!
I agree that Lennon/W-P/ and Walcott are all similar - the most unproductive being W-P.
I'd only take Milner 'cos of his versatility, he's not that skillful.
My 23 would be:
James/Robinson (why b ...[text shortened]... ves (if fit)
Rooney/Heskey/Crouch/Defoe/Walcott/Owen.
I await the expected onslaught!!!
I'd also have a 3rd keeper.
23 isn't very many when you think about it.

So why haven't they been doing it for the past 14 odd years?
The number of goals scored during United's treble winning season of 99, which Beckham got an assist for was incredible. He was also generally the top assist getter in the Premiership during his years there.
Your bias is not founded on the truth.
D
My .." bias ".. is founded on, Beckham has achieved nothing with England !
Would you say that Beckham was more influentual than Scholes or Giggs during that time ?
In the cold light of day , apart from selling a lot of merchandice for his respective clubs .As an England player . What has he achieved ?
Nothing ! [unless you think a quater final is an achievement }
Why play him again ,and again ?

that's okay, you don't have to think of anything clever to say when you stoop to childish name-calling. in fact, i'll join you for kicks. there will be idiots in the world for at least as long as your family can procreate.
I find that veterans usually provide key results well beyond their prime, due to their experience and ability to compensate for their decline in physical prowess. I've seen this in various sports. I think Beckham may not make a lot of noise as has been stated with causing havock on the offense consistently, but he is more likely to connect on real key opportunities and to help his team come out on top than some young upstarts.
That is why I'm for a team like Mexico recruiting back old (as in retired from international competition but still playing) star Borgetti from the last world cup even as it keeps dos santos and vela playing most of the minutes. Same with Cuahtemoc Blanco. I agree with the consideration that Beckham could contribute greatly off the bench (minimally) for England.
Originally posted by trev33Nothing ! But i would rather take them than Beckham . I dont think thats "ridiculous " you have to drop players from the squad . I personnally do not think Beckham would contribute to England getting further than the quarter finals. What makes you think he will this time ?
what has owen, rooney, lampard, terry etc achieved with england? should you not take them as well? that's a ridiculous argument.

Beckham is like the fabled English long bowmen, he is a long range specialist, he can place the ball within inches of a strikers feet from several miles away!

"you're spot on there Robbie!"

Too many strikers and no balance in midfield (you need Young in there).
I'd also have a 3rd keeper.

Ashley Young? He's another W-P.... not for me I'm afraid Rag.
If England reach the final, how many games will they play? 7 I think?
To 'lose' 2 goalkeepers in the space of 7 matches must surely be unprecedented?
For this reason, I wouldn't bother with a 3rd keeper.

crouch is not a player who you can play the long ball to, he's not strong and he can't head the ball. what's the point in being that tall if you can't use it? heskey is much better at that. plus he's not a player who you're going to bring on with 20 mins to go in need of a goal, that would be goalscorers like owen and defoe.
'Crouch can't head the ball'???? - look at some of Spurs goals this season - long ball up to Crouch, flick on, Defoe in behind....
I'm a Heskey fan I'll admit (and I'd rather England started with Heskey than Crouch)...however, your comment 'he's not a player who you're going to bring on with 20 mins to go in need of a goal' - at 0-0 with 20 minutes left, there's no other pairing I'd rather see come on than Crouch and Beckham - Beckham will pick Crouch out from anywhere on the pitch, flick on, Defoe/Rooney/Owen in behind.... see any similarities...?

What makes you think he wouldn't Phil?
The best defenders in the world cup will deal with him ,no problem !
Different story if you have J Cole or Milner running at you , its a defenders worst nightmere ..
The worst thing though, we haven't progressed past the quarters with Beckham, and unless you think this side is far superior to any previous "Beckham side " [ plus he is older ] it will be the same old story !!!!
What do you think blade about Englands chances /Beckham ?
