you have a 5 gallon jug and a 3 gallon jug. you also have an infinite supply of water. explain the steps need to get 4 gallons of water into the 5 gallon jug. And you must have EXACTLY 4 gallons.

1) Fill 3g and pour into 5g (now has 3g in it).
2) Fill 3g and pour into 5g (only has 2g left), leaving 1g in 3g.
3) Empty 5g.
4) Pour 1g from 3g into 5g (now has 1g in it).
5) Fill 3g and pour into 5g (now has 4g in it).

Not too hard:
1. Fill the 3 gallon jug and pour into the 5 gallon jug.
2. Fill the 3 gallon jug again and pour into the 5 gallon jug until full.
(You now have exactly one gallon in the 3 gallon jug)
3. Empty the 5 gallon jug and pour the 1 gallon from the 3 gallon jug to the 5 gallon jug.
4. Fill the 3 gal jug and pour into the 5 gallon jug
You now have exactly 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.🙂

One other way (wastes less water):
Fill the 5g jug and pour into the 3, leaving 2 in 5
empty the 3g jug
pour the 2g from the 5 jug to the 3 jug
fill the 5 jug
fill the 3 jug from the five jug, this takes 1 gallon leaving 4 gallons in the five jug

1)completely fill 5g jug
2)pour contents into 3g jug until overflows (2g will be left in 5g jug)
3)empty 3g jug
4)pour contents (2g) of 5g jug into 3g jug
5)fill 5g jug until overflows
6)use contents of 5g jug to fill 3g jug until overflows (4g left in 5g jug)

Trade the full 3 gallon jug for an empty four gallon one.

If you look closely at the 5g jug, it has measurements up the side. Use these to fill it up to 4g 😛
