@rajk999 saidThe older I get, the more I learn, the more hopeless it all sounds to me.
There are some societies where people grow up unaware of what is going on around them. They are oblivious to what this life is about. Some examples:
- you, apparently only recently realised that life ptoduces garbage which smells badly and people have to deal with it.
- some modern urban grow up believing that chicken, beef and pork etc are made in factories.
- some we ...[text shortened]... . Its just the way some societies are organised, designed to protect people from undesirable truths.
@drewnogal saidNothing is hopeless at all if as you age you learn more and more. People need to keep themselves grounded. A good example [just one of many] is vegan extremists who believe that they need to abuse even kill those who eat meat. These are not well grounded people who have a good grasp of how this world works.

@rajk999 saidI’ve no problem with people eating meat, I cook it for others. What I have a problem with is cruel, industrial farming of animals. I want no part in that.

@drewnogal saidWell the way I see it cruel farming can only be changed over time with government intervention, but this can drastically increase the price of meat. Im not sure people want that. What about the animals that are killed during plant production. There are estimates that place these way in excess of animals killed for meat production.

@very-rusty saidI suspect humanity's greatest achievement has nothing to do with chess.
What is humanity's greatest achievement?
I'd say Russ and Chris have to be right up there. If not for them none of us would be here. 🙂 I should get a few brownie points for that one!

@ghost-of-a-duke saidSo who made you the judge of that?
I suspect humanity's greatest achievement has nothing to do with chess.

@rajk999 saidIt’s about balance and living in harmony with nature. Some people eat far more food than they really need and any wastage of food is scandalous especially when an animal has been slaughtered to provide it.

@very-rusty saidRight now Im hovering around 1350, why?
@Rajk999
Are you a 1400, 1500, or 1700 player? You certainly are not a 1300 something player. 🙂

@drewnogal saidThat sounds nice but it is not practical with concentrations of people in and around cities.. I actually live on a small island and we produce pork and beef and very lillte is wasted. Wastage is inevitable in larger countries because distribution cannot be efficient. Personally I will support better animal farming methods, but I wont loose sleep over that issue neither stop eating meat, which I consider to be essential for good health. A vegan diet is not a good one for most people. Many people who tried being vegan complained that after a few years of that diet they felt weak and disoriented. Its a very hard diet to maintain.

@very-rusty saidWell all that is a function of how much time I devote to chess and the # of games I have going. Been getting clobbered recently because my mind is on other things.
That is my question "WHY"?

There are some great initiatives on new housing developments for inner city people whereby they can grow a few vegetable on a small piece of land immediately next to their homes. This can create a friendly social space whereby neighbours get to know each other, share or swap vegetables with each other and a helpful way to teach children about gardening and healthy eating. And it can even be managed without the use of pesticides and herbicides.
