The worst hurricane to hit Britain since records began devastated southern England and caused at least 19 deaths and tens of millions of £ in damage.

The television weather presenter Michael Fish had the night before infamously told the nation ”Earlier on today, apparently, a woman rang the BBC and said she heard there was a hurricane on the way. Well, if you're watching, don't worry, there isn't!".

In reaction to the controversy, the term "the Michael Fish effect" has been coined, whereby British weathermen are now inclined to predict "a worst-case scenario” in order to avoid being caught out.

This is still one of my favourite movies. A lot of Chaplin's work still amazes me.

    On this day in 1998

Families of World War 1 soldiers executed for cowardice or desertion laid a wreath at the Cenotaph in Whitehall in the first ceremony of its kind to pay tribute to the 306 servicemen who died.

Those soldiers now have a memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
