A win as black in 9 moves (11 if you count the moves to the starting position).

Perhaps not so bad for black after all!

Game 2401934 😀

Ok, finished my first game of the tournament. And I'm sorry to say this Dragon, but your beloved 3.d4 line didn't work. 😀 😛

And this is the reason why I love to play the KG!! (We won't mention the errors from either side in this one! I found a couple of mine right after hitting that darn submit button 🙁 )

We all know that I am jesting and that I don't advocate 3. d4 as a serious move for white and nor do I advocate 3. Ne2 but I have won after playing both. 3. d4 by mistake when I first played the KGA and 3. Ne2 deliberately just to prove I could do it.

On balance 3.d4 is the worst possible reply.

I do however advocate 3. ... d5 for black after 3. Nf3! or 2. ... d5 in preference to eXf.

Clearly your opponent did not know how to contest this opening. Lets see how it all goes in round 2 when you are up against serious opposition.

I'd rate 3. g4 as worse.

After Qh4+; Ke2 .. QXg, Nf3 black only has a P to show for this!

Shall I play a couple of games to demonstrate this? (Against 1400 opposition of course!)

We all know that against opposition of your standard 3. d4, 3. Ne2 or 3. g4 will all be punished with almost certain defeat.

The reality is they are all bad but the the Kings Gambit tournament people are playing d4 and Ne2. I am not sure if anyone has played g4!

Ne2 is worse than d4.

Explanation might help. Basically, after black plays Qh4+ white's got a LOT of catching up to do...g3 fxg3 Nxg3 Bd6 and black's gaining a strong adv. In fact, there may even be a forced mate...I'm going to look it up. Nope.

Come on, no forced mate. I played 2 games playing Ne2 and won them both.

I think d4 is worse! Just my opinion as both are dreadful but
1. e4 ... e5
2. f4 ... f6
is even worse. Especially after
3. fXe .. fXe
which I have seen black play a number of times (not in this tournament obviously)

If you can find a single game in any DB that uses 3.Ne2(not including your own games, of course) I'll consider changing my mind. I can find over 70 that use 3.d4.

What sort of useless database has 3. d4?

Did white lose them all?

I have DB's devoted to both 3.Nf3 and 3.Bc4 that can be used for more serious games. This comes in handy though.
