To be honest, I think a more likely explanation is that there's a creature with a big enough brain to make the link between sex and children and they're just going to become extinct if there isn't enough of a pay off to having it off.

Why would this be any different than feeling pleasure at eating food? Methinks scientists like to over-analyze simple stuff just to keep their paychecks coming.
