I spend loads of time on here de-mystying the game and breaking it down.
Producing games like this are within all of you.

This game played on RHP has strong echoes with the Smylov game.

I played the delayed Ruy Lopez. With the d-pawn on c6 I never have to worry
about Black kicking in a d5. The antidote to all 1.e4 openings.
The delayed Lopez Exchange was part of my opening rep for over 20 years.

The moment this appeard all I planned was getting a Knight to f5.


I even offered a pawn to get it there. (he never took it)

That is why I played 9...Bd2 so he could not pin the Knight on c3.
I never played played 9...Nd2 intending Nf1-g3-f5...


....because he can play Bb4 and if I hit it with c3 I suddenly have a backward pawn
on an open file and he has ideas.
So I have to follow c3 with d4 and he can swap on d4 and play c5.
That was not part of the plan.

Just like Smyslov there is tactical flurry where I nick two pawns with the
same delay in recapturing trick as Smyslov.

I too undouble pawns just to grab the e-file.
(I could ot think of anything else to do with my Bishop).

I hold the e-file like Smylov held the 7th. Black cannot trade Rooks as
the King & pawn ending, the easiest of all endings to win (if you are winning)
is a stroll.

And I think my swap off pawn sac transposing into a won pawn ending
is just as good as Smyslov's. (in fact it's better) 😏

Judge for yourself.

If a crap kicker like me can do something this then so can you.
Now get out there and play then post me a masterpiece.

May I ask; why the delay in taking on c6? You seem to lose a tempo. If it is to trick the Knight to f6, why is that so desirable for White?

Possibly the Vidmar game, along with 10 others were left out of the orginal
English version edit by P.H,Clarke in 1958.

Vasily V. Smyslov: My Best Games of Chess: 1935-1957

To produce an English edition of this work it was felt desirable to round it off by
adding a selection of his games from the period 1952-1957 and at the same time
to omit a few of the original games for the sake of balance.

In fact I have left out 11 games and added a further 18 to bring the
total to 67 in all.

So perhaps the Vidmar game was one of those given the chop.
I'll look at a 1958 edition sometime next week and confirm.

They have this dog-eared copy of Smyslov's 'My Best Games 1937-1951'

They throw out 11 games annotated by Smyslov. Put in 18 games not
annotated by Smyslov rename the book. 'My Best Games 1937-1957.
