Over here in the USA, a few years ago I considered getting back into American-style puzzle construction for pocket money, but even then there was software that could generate most or all of the grid, so most of the human involvement at the time would have had to do with coming up with clever (American-style) clues, and I felt the competition was too fierce and perhaps desperate.
Maybe here I'll add that in general, as a somewhat literate American, I appreciate the linguistic cleverness and excellence of at least some of the people of GB and the Commonwealth.
