Iran does not need to defeat the entire U.S. military in order to come out stronger in the regional political situation.
Militarily speaking, a stalemate is sufficient to thwart Trump‘s stated objective of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
Iran only needs to hang on, militarily, and delay any negotiated deals, in order to deal the GOP a severe blow In the upcoming U.S. elections, because the war is very unpopular in the U.S. This could ultimately topple Trump and the GOP from power—a clear win for Iran and a debacle for Trump. This happened once before, when Iran held U.S. citizens hostage, making Jimmy Carter look weak and ineffectual, and helped propel Reagan to power. Could very well happen again this November.
Financially, this war has been a huge win for Trump and his biliousaire insider trading buddies.
There has been no regime change in Iran. The same power structures are still in power. The same man who would have replaced the previous head of state has done so, a little sooner than expected. There has been no people‘s revolution. Iran has not surrendered any nuclear materials. The world still does not know how close Iran was or indeed still is to obtaining a nuclear weapon. The region is not more secure. The US’s ability to resupply its fleet has been severely degraded, as the situation aboard the USS Lincoln has made abundantly clear. This can in no way be considered a win for the United States. Given that the US has not obtained any of its stated objectives—unconditional surrender!!—I think Iran is justified in claiming that it hasn’t lost.
This is a clear loss for the US public, both at the gas pump, and for the national debt.

The more I think about this, the more I think the balance of gains and loss heavily favors Iran. Iran has learned that it can hold the entire world hostage by closing the Strait, or threatening to close the straight; this gives Iran enormous leverage which it did not know that it had before. It can apply this leverage at any time again in the future. This gives Iran a veto power which it did not have before. The United States picked a fight with a third-class military, and cannot guarantee that the Strait stays open by military presence alone. This is a slap in the face to US diplomacy, and to the US military. It demonstrates once again, that superior fire power alone does not decide engagements.
It is a temporary gain for Trump personally, in that it has knocked the Epstein scandal off the front pages. We are now 8 days shy of 9 months overdue to see the files released, and no one is calling him on it. But it will have a backlash for him.
