I do not know what you were taught, but I would guess Traditional Christianity, maybe a good Baptist church or similar...
You were taught to be good, obey the rules, do good works to please God.
In other words, clean up the outside but inside, you still had the same old issues of doubt, etc.
The gospel is the "power" of God,
Rom 1:16-17

If you did not see power, such as healing, deliverance, revelation from God, then you were probably taught a watered down brand of Christianity, religiosity, as you say.

You won't be the first Christian to try to blame mental health for loss of faith or different beliefs. Totalitarian regimes do it too. Without the Christian Bible there is no Christian faith. Simple as that.
