Intellectualism is that ism that attempts to disguise error falsity and ignorance in so many words.

Persons are very proud of their Phd,s - and the more they have the more worthwhile they feel.

What is the use of intellectualism - if at the end of the day persons with Phd,s do not know who and what they are.

They believe they are the body and the body is just chemicals - so they are believing they are a bag of chemicals.

Ask them why this bag of chemicals is struggling so hard for existence and suffering and they will say its the meaning of life to do so.

They will say that they are on the threshold of solving the problems of life - namely getting more and more stuff.

The more stuff that the bag of chemicals can procure the more successful and happy is the bag of chemicals.

So the intellectualist believes that the purpose of their life is to struggle to get stuff to make the bag of chemicals happy.

This is where intellectualism has come so far with its intellectualizing.

I get that urge myself, but before it happens to me, let me say, Dasa,
in this case, speaks the truth.

No, he doesn't. A sweeping generalization such as Dasa's may have a certain level of veracity to it, but in no way does that support the notion that his post--as in his entire post--is the truth. Now if you don't mind, I'm going back to sleep.

I know what you are saying here. I would say is that what you describe here, (ie the vanities of thinking oneself to be "intellectual" ), are something to be realized and gone beyond "in search" of Spirit. It is not a bad thing , per se , to be intellectual, the problem is the ego that has a tendency to contstantly want to declare itself as superior to others aournd it, and hence, in it's bid to try to "sit " in one area of knowledge and become a specialist in this field, it can miss the point altogether of the spiritual direction.

It is always a humbling to meet someones superior in intellect, to be sure, but this should represent an opportunity (to learn something p'haps) not a problem .
So being an "intellectual" should not be a goal of the spiritual seeker, right? (On this I can agree)

If you make your observation just anodyne and fuzzy enough, maybe everyone can kind of agree with you. 😀

Yes - you are once again correct because over intellectualizing can have you go straight past the truth and find yourself where you actually started.

Persons who over intellectualize usually do not want to accept spiritual truth - but are fond of demonstrating their wizardry with words.

Being smart [intelligent] has always been a massive disadvantage.

I certainly do not think of myself as an "intellectual" but I am smart enough to know that people lacking in common sense (and sometimes common decency too) will often try to use the word "intellectual" as an insult. Not very clever if you ask me. It rather brings to mind the whole issue of 'emotional intelligence'. I think a lack of this is in play in this thread's OP.

My view is that cognitive intelligence has absolutely nothing to do with spirituality whatsoever. Emotional intelligence helps us get our point of view accepted if not agreed with; a lack of this is often confused in this forum with a lack of humility or love or caring or whatever.

I find it amusing that dasa starts a thread about anti-intellectualism when his stated belief structure is based on people having a certain level of "intelligence"; rvsakhadeo also confirmed his view of this in another thread, and I have had Mormons tell me that accepting their gospel is dependent on intelligence levels too.

I would of course take it up with dasa directly, but he will only ignore me as he thinks my disagreeing with him is dishonesty. This is fine.

I think any belief system or spiritual path that does not foster emotional intelligence has something seriously wrong with it.

That intelligence that does not serve the true purpose of the human life is wasted intelligence.

The true purpose of the human life is to establish our lost love for God (nothing less)

The point in question here is that you and other Hindus here declare that without a certain level of intelligence you cannot comprehend your version of spirituality. I say this is an offensive position to hold and that spirituality has nothing to do with intelligence whatsoever.

You need intelligence to determine truth from falsity.

But without honesty the intelligence will accept truth as false and false as truth.

Everyone has intelligence but they are lacking in honesty.

It is the lack of honesty that causes the intelligence to work for falsity instead of truth..

When I say one has not the intelligence to understand - I mean they are misusing the intelligence they do have.

Instead of intelligently supporting God - they are using their intelligence to disprove God.

Intelligence that defeats itself - is the same as having no intelligence.

Therefore i say they have no intelligence.
