The crushing bit is only temporary . A few weeks of only truth dispels any bad feelings

Being true starts with identity. Your own identity and others

That is the hard part
You are Not physical but the lie persists

No problem for the 'poor in spirit'

You're a Line Manager to a pretty hopeless employee who is not very good at anything. In your supervision meeting with him, do you tell him so (blunt truth) knowing it will crush his spirit, or do you perhaps tell a small white lie to boost his morale and motivate him to develop?

Compare the 2:

Truth - "I see no potential in you whatsoever."
Lie - "Come on mate, I see potential in you. Try harder."

You're a regular font of false dichotomies.

There's no need to lie to him. No manager worth his salt would need to.

A frightened woman runs past. A minute later, a deranged looking man asks you which way she went.

Do you lie about it?

How about either not answering him or saying, “None of your business?”

How about ignoring him and calling the cops?

Come on, kiddo.

I don't want him to hurt me or her, so I'd point him the wrong way. I feel lying is morally permissible in such a situation, even if it could be handled without it.

Its called lying for a higher moral imperative.
The wise lie all the time and prospers and is one of the sons of God.
The foolish man tells the whole truth to everyone and suffers the consequences.

How do you reconcile that with the following?

John 8
44“You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Wouldn't such people only be "wise" in the eyes of men and be sons of the devil?

The wise man knows when to hold his tongue, or use his wisdom to divert a potential disaster. Jesus did it all the time with the Pharisees. They constantly asked him questions and rather that tell the truth he diverted the topic or spoke in parables.

Let me know if you want some examples.
