Exodus 20:5 (and Deuteronomy 5:9, the verses are identical) says: "Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;"
The Christian God is the God of Abraham, the God of the Jews; of course he is a jealous God.
However, comparing the love of God to a human's love of a puppy is the "human spin" part. It's just not the same.

I like the analogy of the dad. In much of Christian thinking, this image is marred by the principle of condemnation for sin. My earthly father never condemned me like that when I screwed up. So why can't the heavenly father also cut his kids a little slack?!
