Religion has not been hostile to science in the past. There have been isolated (and famously misguided) instances of hostility to science. The fundementals of science were established in universities which were, at the time, religious foundations

So would you say religion, and lets be blunt and say Christianity, is hostile to science only when it directly conflicts with religious dogma? Because I believe that's the point of the original post.

Catholics don't seem to be hostile to science for the most part at all. They accept evolution, for instance. It's the American Protestants who are generally anti science.
