Read the posts, they contain at least 4 proofs of 1 = 0.999...

If you want I can post some here.

So what's unclear? Multiply both sides by 3 and you have the proof.

First off. That fact that this thread has gone on for 15 pages is rediculous.

Secondly, I think the site should institute negative recs so I can negate the one that someone just gave to Caro Kahn.

Caro this is about the infinate continuation of .9999.... not the specific number .9999. If you do understand that then you are just being argumentative, and shame on you.

If you do not understand this, do some simple reading and math before you respond next time.

1/3 = .333....
3 * (1/3) = 1
3 * .333.... = .9999....

Case closed and please some one have a mod destory this thread.

I don't see the problem?
Of course three times a third is a whole!
Who can argue against that?
Simple math...

No? Really?
Just simple daycare maths. Am I wrong?

a=0.999...
10a=9.999...
10a-a=9.999...-a
9a=9
a=1

qed

1 and 0.999... are more equal than 1/2=2/4 though. i mean, since when was 2 blue things and two red things equal to only having one red and one blue thing?!? they're not!

BBRR does not equal BR. it's just crazy!

2/4 does NOT mean you have 2 reds and 2 blues.

2/4 stands for a ratio or a part.

2/4 means

- of the 4 things i have in total, 2 are 'special'
- two-fourth of all I have is 'special'

Thus 2/4 means EXACTLY the same as 1/2. Saying that 2 of every four things is 'special' is identical to saying 1 out of every 2 things is 'special'.

but if you have 2 blues out of 4 this does not mean you have 1 blue in two.

they are not exactly equal. they are isometric.

What does 'isometric' mean? If you mean 'isomorphic', then what is an isomorphism between the structures '1/2' and '2/4'? What sort of structures are these, anyway?

If you're asserting the existence of some isometry, how is it defined?

if 1=.9999999999........... then why not just say "1". What is the point of having 0.99999999999999............

You do naturally as you please and what's best in any particular situation.

How do you write a third? As .333 or 1/3 ?
Same answer - do as you please, it's the same number.

Is this a problem? Not for me.
