Does anyone play Nf3 to avoid the ruy lopez? I love sicilian games, but love it when I get to play a sicilian game. If I convert to Nf3 then what are some things I may encounter as problematic, being that I am a e4 player and not a d4 player.

Maybe he's been spending too much time in Adorea's alcohol and marijuana thread. 😉

No I want to play my first move as Nf3. I want to find lines that avoid the ruy lopez. I can at least deveate if black tries to play Nf6 and e5 you see?

you are not forced to play the ruy lopez in the first place. With 1. e4 you could play the italian Bishop c4, the scotch pawn d4, or the kings gambit f4. You can play a lot of things without playing the spanish and still play e4. or your opponent might put into the sicilian, alekhine, french, or carocann. I just do not see how you are forced into spanish games playing e4.

I hate the ruy lopez with a pation. I always feel like I'm in a cramped position.

Then don't play it as white!

all e5 games seem way too drawish. Maybe I just don't know how to attack.

The entire purpose of this thread escapes me. Like onehandgann said, the Ruy is an opening for White. If you're so afraid of the Ruy, why don't you just play 1.c4 or 1.d4 (or any of a number of other openings that quickly avoid the Ruy) and be done with it? Or am I missing something?
