Gibraltar! 6.Bg5 and a Chess Rule of Thumb.

Only Chess

A proper look at 6.Bg5 in this position (last week I got side tracked.)

Gibraltar!

Last round thrills at St. Petersburg 1914

We look at a good Rule of Thumb. (with an RHP game needlessly breaking it.)

This toughie. White to play and mate in 3 moves composed by J. Berger 1887.

Bg5 is a cheap bullet trick that catches out some people at 3 a.m. nice to see someone has tried this during the day!

I could not figure out the Rf1 in the mate in 3, I hate puzzles but i thought Qd3 or Rb1 but those did not mate in 3.

Hi congruent,

It is tough, I never solved it.

Nobody has pulled me up yet about the picture of Gibraltar...It's not Gibraltar.

I often sneak in things like this in the blog. Here:

Blog Post 372

I claimed there was a picture of Morphy on the wall in the film,
It's not (sadly) I took a copy the frame and doctored the picture.

There are others (most likely appearing as fact somewhere else on the net.)

I have to be careful because some people do not know when I'm joking.
See: Blog Post 436

Now go to the very bottom of the page here:

The 'falsehood' appeared here - not on the English Chess Forum. (I'm infamous!)

Hope Mr.Winter is OK. His site has mention from March 2020 it was being 'curtailed.'

Hi GP, except that there's a building on it it looks more like Rockall. I just assumed that it was some small island off Gibraltar and didn't really think about it further. The thread in ecforum makes for entertaining reading.
