An amazing game!

I analysed a few lines using the very strong Houdini engine, trying to find some sort of defence for Black, but didn't manage to find anything.

It seems that White's play from Bxd6 onwards was completely sound. Just wonderful. 🙂

Perhaps the winner should be nicknamed Hou Din Yi

It's worth reminding ourselves too that the guys playing this game are pretty much unknown outside China. The same applies to the overall Championship winner, Ding Liren who, at 19, remains 'unknown' - unknown except for winning the Chinese Championship in 2009, that is, presumably when 17 😲

The country has a quite small chess-playing community. But their elite development methods must be astonishing to produce such young high quality players. That said, we don't hear much about Chinese players once they reach 28+

atticus, are you indicating that the game was not played under normal conditions?

I'm sure it was played under absolutely normal conditions. That's why it's so fantastic

Rxf7 wins, sure, but Qg6+ is still more crushing.

Taking the queen is mate in 8, not taking the queen (Kf8) mates as well, for instance as follows:

Widen your hash table, give the engine multiple PV - and houdini finds it.
Stockfish finds a few sidelines that have a strange beauty to them as well.

Doesn't detract from the games beauty. Obviously great.
