Today.. we escape...
We escape.

Pack... and get dressed...
Before your father hears us
Before... all hell... breaks loose.

Breathe... keep breathing
Don’t lose.. your nerve.
Breathe... keep breathing
I can’t do this.. alone.

Sing... us a song...
A song to keep us warm
There’s... such a c ...[text shortened]... at you choke
We hope that you choke... that you choke
We hope that you choke... that you choke
I listened to that song this morning. There was an accident.

I listened to that song this morning. There was an accident.
Pushing thru the market square, so many mothers sighing
News had just come over, we had five years left to cry in
News guy wept and told us, earth was really dying
Cried so much his face was wet, then I knew he was not lying
I heard telephones, opera house, favourite melodies
I saw boys, toys electric irons and t.v.’s
My brain hurt like a warehouse, it had no room to spare
I had to cram so many things to store everything in there
And all the fat-skinny people, and all the tall-short people
And all the nobody people, and all the somebody people
I never thought I’d need so many people

A girl my age went off her head, hit some tiny children
If the black hadn’t a-pulled her off, I think she would have killed them
A soldier with a broken arm, fixed his stare to the wheels of a cadillac
A cop knelt and kissed the feet of a priest, and a queer threw up at the sight of that
I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlour, drinking milk shakes cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine, don’t think
You knew you were in this song
And it was cold and it rained so I felt like an actor
And I thought of ma and I wanted to get back there
Your face, your race, the way that you talk
I kiss you, you’re beautiful, I want you to walk

We’ve got five years, stuck on my eyes
Five years, what a surprise
We’ve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that’s all we’ve got
We’ve got five years, what a surprise
Five years, stuck on my eyes
We’ve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that’s all we’ve got
We’ve got five years, stuck on my eyes
Five years, what a surprise
We’ve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that’s all we’ve got
We’ve got five years, what a surprise
We’ve got five years, stuck on my eyes
We’ve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that’s all we’ve got

Daddy ate the diamonds and washed them down with ice.
Said it was a pennance for every lasting vice
and there's a reason he's still waiting, there's one more job to do.
Bring them here and we will fill them up with every sort of sweety,
there's a glimpse of lace and tassel and the smell of musk and rose

It's a twenty-four hour service,
guaranteed to make you nervous,
it's a final act of courage that will polute,
we are alone

Mother sits awaiting with a glass of lemonade.
She's had a slip, a cut, a bandage, for every toy she's made.
And though it's dark her eyes will see you, there's a lot of life in shadow.
To the dogs they'll try and feed you, hate and scorn their way will lead you.
You're just dancing in the whirlpool with a garland and a song

There's no time for us to save you,
not a twenty-four hour service,
we are the dissafected youth,
with the apathetic grins,
we are alone

So be still my precious, there's footsteps on the stair.
I love you in your knee-high socks and the ribbons in your hair
and though the light may fall upon us, there's no warmth in daylight's kiss.
There's just the simple smell of candles and the mist upon the window, I'm the flickering of lamplight and the breeze upon your neck

There's no time to count in hours,
your breathing makes me nervous.
We are the children of pure morning.
We are alone,
we are alone,
we are alone

Sometimes, when I'm lonely, I like to roll my dad's sweater up into a ball and hug it till I fall asleep.

Sometimes I wake up and realise I dreamed it.

It was as close as you can get: three teams tied for first, with an equal number of match points.
