"Free Love" and the Pill ruined an entire generation.
Too much TV ruined an entire generation.
Computer Games ruined an entire generation.
Social Media ruined an entire generation.
What all those things did was "change" society.
Perhaps for good perhaps for bad - but certainly it wasn't the end of civilisation.
Mostly I think it governments wishing to pass the buck.
If you really want to know how to ruin a generation think of these.
WW1, WW2, Vietnam.

Besides which, it is the responsibility of society/government to
nurture and educate those children who have inadequate parents.

Okay maybe that's a bit extreme.
Trouble is, who's going to do the nurturing and educating. I could never be a teacher, but their job is surely to impart knowledge and not to sort out all of the social and emotional problems which walk through the classroom door every day?

Most schools in UK and NZ have School Counsellors.
Governments have a duty to those kids disadvantaged by inadequate parenting.

And the damage is done in the first thousand days.
Long before social services can take the kids away.

It's the job of the teachers to educate the children.
It's the job of the parents to make the children educatable.
If the parents don't do their job, the teachers have nothing to work with, and the parents only have themselves to blame.
And to all those who now want to complain about "but the media... but peer pressure... but that awful, awful internet...": if your child is such a fragile, fickle little greenhouse flower that it can't deal with the real world, you didn't raise it strong enough. You, and nobody else, are to blame for your child's lack of social nous.

But society (aka Government) must be there to pick up the pieces.
The cost, both in terms of suffering and hard cash,
is much more if there is no safety net for these kids.
