I suppose there are worse ways to go.
It was a sloe death. Would have been quicker if he hadn't climbed out 3 times to go to the toilet.

I’ve never heard of a container called a butt. I see now that it’s a kind of barrel. A visiting polish relative told us that his neighbour had been found dead in a barrel. He’d somehow lost his balance and had slipped in, arms and head first. They can be impossible to get out of and if half filled would cause drowning really quickly. A horrible freak accident.

One suspects the Duke had little choice about getting out, he was executed in the tower.

Seems a very elaborate way of executing someone, even in those times!

Yeah, Charlie. I was in the US Air Force in the 1970's, stationed at Travis AFB, California. To get to the base from my apartment I had to drive by the prision where Charlie was. There were signs along the roadway near the prision: 'Do Not Pickup Hitchhikers!' Good advice.

And as was bound to be, he did get the death penalty.

Death penalty yes, but very late, of old age. It costs a horrendous amount of money keep people alive in prison for decades. Murderers like that should not only cease to be threat to society, but cease to be a burden on it as well. I'd have had no compunction about supporting the death penalty by quicker means for such a one as Manson.

And if he had lived to be 100 he would have been denied ANOTHER 12.

It would have been interesting to let him go when he was say 90 and not give him a safe house or some such, live on the street,
