That has gone clear over my head (not just the flies).
Even Prof. Google could not help me.

I therefore agree (the default position to avoid looking stupid).

“I had gone no more than a dozen feet when I was joined by a fly- smaller and blacker than a housefly. It buzzed around in front of my face and tried to settle on my upper lip. I swatted it away, but it returned at once, always to the same spot. A moment later it was joined by another that wished to go up my nose. It also would not go away. Within a minute or so I had perhaps twenty of these active spots all around my head and I was swiftly sinking into the state of abject wretchedness that come with a prolonged encounter with an Australian fly."

However I have no further understanding of the point of this thread.

Another reason to come to NZ rather than Oz!
The NZ flies (like the birds) have not evolved to deal with mammals and
are certainly the slowest and most easily swattable I've encountered.

I have only read one of his books some time back and was not particularly impressed. But I know that he has a lot of fans.

Agreed, agreed and agreed.
But I'm wondering if you've been in the sun a tad too long, old chap.
Perhaps a short winter break in the UK might be most efficacious.

Some would say it's a matter of quantity of books rather than quality.

I was very amused reading 'A Short History of Nearly Everything', but slightly disappointed reading a next book by him.

North or South?
North for the weather.
South for everything else.
