The argument against nato from the perspective of that part of Europe is like arguing that African nations should not form an alliance to prevent the return of the British Empire because it might be a bit threatening to the British.
All Russians have to do is stay in Russia like the Poles stay in Poland. There is only one aggressor here.

Russia does not have to take cities quickly. He is surrounding them and denying them food and supplies. When they get hungry enough they will lay down their arms and surrender.
