Wayne LaPierre, Vice President of the National Rifle Association
has just finished a press conference in which he declared that
more guns are the answer to solving the problem of the recent atrocity.

LaPierre wants an armed cop in every school.

Failing that, he wants to create a program where voluntary
armed groups will act as security in every school.

He would not answer any questions from the floor.

So is that to be the way forward?

More guns???

What say you?

Hahaha

God damn. Not only more guns, but gun-totin' vigilantes!!

The mere fact someone can think of it, never bloody mind call it a good idea, is too bizarre to contemplate.

In fact, it reminds me of that old song about vigilante men. I think it's by Gutherie, but I know Springsteen sang it on a warchild album.

Total madness and I say: go for it!!! Do Al Qaeda's work for them.

Its such a bad solution it is actually funny. I taught in NYC where hats and cel phone were banned because they claimed they were security risks. The likely result would be that untrained volunteers would end up shooting someone because of inevitable arguments after someone violated the hat &/ or cel phone rule.

Having more guns as the answer to gun violence is like saying more sex is the
answer to the overpopulation situation. But there is enough stupid people out there who'll believe it.

Gun suppliers control the NRA.

"Since 2005, according to a 2011 report of the Violence Policy Center, the NRA has raised up to $52.6 million from its "corporate partners," 74 percent of which are members of the firearms industry. They include manufacturers of high-capacity ammunition magazines and such well-known gun makers as Remington Arms Co., Smith & Wesson Corporation, Beretta USA Corporation, Browning, Springfield Armory, and the Freedom Group, the parent company of Bushmaster, maker of the semi-automatic rifle reportedly used in the Newtown mass murder."

Except for the ones who ended up at 'Boot hill'.

An armed society is a paranoid, dysfunctional, nightmare driven society, what happened to the dream?

I don't know. This is obviously a very complex issue. It's not as simple as confiscation (will never happen - in fact, probably the best possible way to start a revolution); banning high-capacity magazines (there are already millions out there, maybe tens of millions); nor is it as simple as "everyone pack heat".

If you ban guns outright, only criminals will have them. I know this sounds self-serving and circular, but the simple fact is that you're not going to be able to get them all. There's just no way.

There must be some way to address the mental health issues. I don't know what those ways are without creating a leviathan state and having every single American even more paranoid than they already are.

I think we're becoming an increasingly isolated society. Isolated from each other, and living on line. Hell, this website is a good example. An awful lot of vitriol gets thrown around on this website. People get dehumanized by the ways we interact with each other. My guess is if you put even the most extreme examples of misanthropes together in the same room, we'd probably all get along for the most part. Out here, you can say anything with no fear of consequence. I think that the vast majority of people can handle it; but there are a few notable examples (the Virginia Tech shooter, this instance) of people who don't interact, never learn to negotiate society or with their peers, never learn how to deal with people. And when the rage is no longer tolerable, it explodes, and people pay with their lives. The most tragic part of this - I have a neice who's ten, and nephews who are seven, three, three, and six months. I'd be heartbroken to lose any of them for any reason, but to violence of any kind - well, God bless and watch over those parents. It's too awful to contemplate.

Ninety-two percent of Americans support background checks. Of course, the NRA opposes them.

Sixty-three percent of Americans support banning assault rifles, only 32% oppose. That includes a majority of conservatives and gun owners. But of course, the NRA is opposed.

Sixty-nine percent of Americans support banning internet sales of guns and ammo. The NRA is financially vested in such sales.

Seventy-six percent of Americans support closing the gun-show loophole, only 19 percent oppose. Seventy-one percent of conservatives agree. Logically, the NRA sits with the 19 percent fringe.

Only five percent of Americans oppose banning gun ownership for convicted violent felons. Naturally, the NRA sits with that five percent fringe. Heck, they're even okay with potential terrorists buying and owning guns!

Sixty-four percent of Americans support banning magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, including a majority of conservatives and gun owners. Too bad the NRA opposes that too.

The gun nuts posting on the message boards across the country do not even represent a majority of Republicans and Tea Party members. They are the EXTREME of the extreme.

As for the NRA, it is a domestic terror network with terrorist cells operating all across the country. They should be classified as such and prosecuted as such.

I wonder if Adam Lanza would have volunteered for such duty.

There is a strong likelihood that the presence of an armed person would deter most nuts away from schools to softer targets.

Detroit Public Schools have guards and metal detectors. Any shooting is always outside the schools.
