It has never been proven that the death penalty is a deterrent to crime, and that's not for lack of trying on the part of researchers over the course of decades.

The only sure thing about capital punishment is that it causes incalculable collateral damage. The list of people executed who later were found to be innocent is a long one indeed.

Having such an execution in the US certainly makes a point. Namely, the right-wing in the US has very much in common with Muslim extremists. The highest price paid to society for the worst crime in society, funny how you look at it here in comparison. You just compared the US to places like Iran that actually murdered in cold blood thousands upon thousands of it’s own people in the streets and it’s not the first time by far just in smaller numbers.
