Because it was too close to jazz or not close enough?

not sure. I don't care for jazz, but never found it painful to listen to--until I heard that.

Phil Woods/Herbie Mann--Beyond Brooklyn...

Woods is an alto player I'm getting into. My boss at work is both an alto player and the leader of a large jazz ensemble and he describes Woods' playing in the following way: "like Charlie Parker but with better tone!"

Jerry Garcia and Grisman playing Miles' So What too...it's from the album the pizza tapes, which is far from jazz but still great.

A little West Coast, heh? You must top it off with Art Pepper or at least Shelley Manne.

What do you think? The Aladdin recordings for Pepper and the Blackhawk recordings for Manne?

By the way ..., did you get your name from the Wynton Marsalis album, "Think of One"? I noticed the jazz question and then your 'name' ...

Pat Metheny Group - "Jaco"

You might want to consider where Marsalis got the name of his album 🙂
