It's a bit like Anand and Topalov having a match to earn the right to play me for the World Championship:-)
Lets say all the big guns get easy draws, They are playing against the cannon fodder under 1600's and each get an 1800/1900 opponent. In each game the big guns and the 1800/1900 win all their games. The deciders will be the two games they are playing. The big gun for some reason times out and doesn't go through.

Is that stupid or fair?

Worse still the big gun and the 1800/1900 agree draws. The big gun has decided he will go through as the 1800/1900 lost two games to a 1700 rater and he should beat him easily. Again he times out and the 1700 rater advances.

Is that stupid or fair?

An 1800/1900 player does not advance as the big guns beat him in the 1st round but was subsequently proved to be an engine user and banned.

Is that stupid or fair?

Maybe have a look at any sporting event and have a think about it:-)
What is more interesting, for a 1600 guy? to play in a group with 2200 guy, or without?
and what is more interesting, for a 1400 guy? to be the challenger of a 1600 or of 1900?

In my opinion, the format of the RHP championship is just fine. The luck of the draw is part of the fun.

Perhaps a separate RHP Closed Championship would satisfy some of the posters in this thread.

Or better yet, two sections with the break at about 1600 with lower rated players allowed to play up. It would lower the game load for each round and would no doubt bring more high rated players to the tournament,

I agree, it is great for an mid ranked player to have a chance to win a group

Just about pairing discussion, I think it could be great to do like in grand chelem tennis tournaments , with random pairing but something like 5 or 10% top players "protected" and sure to not play against themselves in the first round..

My answer would depend on which tourn I had entered. I enter the championship to play the best players. There are plenty of banded tourns if I want to play my peers.

I suppose you could say I'll get my wish in the next round. But what about that monk fella?

Leaders of group 59 and 67 would be very nice to timeout their opponents, top permit the tournament to continue...
