you would need a 30 point head start to get a sponser 😛

It's open again. I'm in... what madness awaits?! I've not played that many games with that fast time control for ages.

Given that the tournament is intended as three rounds long, and currently has group size 9.

An interesting equation is: 9x9x9=729.

At what point is it worth raising the groupsize for the tournament to 10?

Never.

You are assuming that there will only be 1 person from each group moving on. That is not the case.

Given that the 2007 Tourney only had 590 entrants and the original groups were of 9 and 10, I would say that something similar will happen and you may find group sizes are 10 and 11.

With 748 entrants, group sizes of 10 will give 75 groups which is 10 more than last year.

You could be looking at 68 groups of 11, meaning an extra 4 games per person in the first round.

groupsize 11 is a bad idea ... it will mean that the third round will only have a very few players ... and the disaster of a final round draw becomes unnecessarily likely.

groupsize 10 will mean that the first two rounds have 10 players but the last round might only have 8.

groupsize 9 might still be the best, even with 800 players : it will mean the first two rounds have only 9 players per group but the final round has 10 or 11 making a draw in the last round highly unlikely.
