Pride as an emotion involves the development of a sense
of self. Perhaps you are confusing pride with joy?

I am joyful
of being Mexican, if that responds your question,
because it has given the chance of seeing and understanding
many things which perhaps I would not have been face ...[text shortened]... oud" of your skin
color? Are you "proud" to be a male?

Dangerous stuff, I tell you.
I don't disagree with you, and maybe I didn't use 'proud' in its true context?
I used a phrase 'proud to be English' - which if you dissect it is gramatically incorrect as 'proud' does pertaine to something an individual has achieved - so you'd be correct.
However, like I said, it's a phrase...and I'm sure if you look at a lot of other phrases they too would be gramatically incorrect!

Will you stop beating me over the head about it now please?
😉

Let's say that you're joyful to be English.

That, my friend, is a noble and kind feeling.
If only now Chelsea would win the EPL and
make your joy even greater 🙂

Just teasing.

I know you're a decent chap and, henceforth, a Gooner like me.

Yes, the FACTS are that you were born, work, and live in SA...everything else you've mentioned is your opinion.

...and then when you run out of anything constructive to say you resort to name calling.
I could respond with a quippy, undermining comment, but you know what - I'm not 12 years old anymore.
LOL, did you take debate lessons from Very Rusty?

At least 12 year olds know when they're wrong and can admit it.

Why would I be proud of something I didn't choose or fought

Because there is a commonness that you share with your parents or even countrymen. If someone tries to rob your grandmother and she manages to defend herself despite of her age, you wouldn't feel proud? BS. Or wouldn't you feel a sense of pride if Mexico won the World Cup?

You're like the people who look at emotions and discover they are not always the product of rational thinking. Whoop-de-doo.

I can tell you the same I said blade: I'd joyful, not proud.

In your example, I would be proud of my granny's courage,
of course. But feeling "proud" of her just for the coincidence that
she happened to spawn a human who later on spawned me...
come on.

As for the other example, if Mexico wins the WC (which is unlikely)
I would feel tremendous joy and I would spam your threads for the
next 4 years bragging about the triumph over Portugal 😛 But, pride?
Yeah, well, I would be proud of the 22 guys who finally managed to
put aside the eternal defeatism of national football. But that's different
than being proud of myself for just "being" something.

Is it different? I don't buy it, sorry. You've been brainwashed by your Catholic education into thinking that pride is necessarily bad. 😛

What's the point, then?

That misunderstood, exogenous pride has been the cause
of more sorrow than joy throughout human history?

What does that even mean? There were a lot of proud men who did "good" as well as proud men who did "evil/bad" things.
