South Africans' opinion about the likely aftermath is highly
appreciated, e.g. do you foresee levels of social tension
which may impact stadium attendance, hotel occupancy
rates, etc.?
The situation was bad long before Terreblanche was killed. This is just a minor thing that is highlighting the ridiculous nature of a certain branch (ANC Youth League) of the governing political party who are making comments about how AWESOME it is to kill white people. Terreblanche's supporters are minuscule, they're a minority within a minority within a minority. Zuma appealing for calm from this tiny group is just spin, trying to present the idea that there's any real danger from them and that they're dangerous people.

There are problems ranging from infrastructure to transportation to good old fashioned corruption. I'm probably a really bad South African for saying this, but I wouldn't recommend to my friends to come here for the Cup. Rather come over when things aren't so crazy. Summertime is good. Come to Cape Town in summer and have a fantastic and safe holiday on the beach. I've always felt completely safe when walking the streets of Cape Town even at 3am after a night out.
For now, stay home and watch the World Cup on your television.

I am sorry to hear that the spillover effect won't be that much
because of the fans staying at home, though --if they do. SA is
in need for fresh money pouring in.
As for the footie, emptier stadiums or a tense atmosphere
will definitely affect the entertainment. I am also very sorry

Like hoppy said, public transportation will be the biggest problem, and probably petty crime too. SA isn't a 'dangerous place' like some people make it out to be - but like most countries, there are places you don't go to alone after dark...

Suporters were already staying away because of the threat of localised violence and gang culture - and I now hear that even some of the major sponsors are sending back their 'freebie' tickets!
More than 1/3rd of the tickets available are still going begging - it sounds to me like the only supporters in some of these stadiums will be those unbearable bugle blowers that blighted the Confederations Cup last year.
Hiked up prices of air fares and hotel rooms, not to mention the fact that SA doesn't have enough hotels to accomodate a WC have also put supporters off traveling.
A recent estimate for an England fan to travel was 10k....!!!!
Has anyone told the organisers that there's a global credit crunch going on?

Don't you think a poorer continent, and especially Sub-Saharan African people, should also get the chance to go see some WC games live, which almost none can afford when the competition is played anywhere else?
