Well, besides knowing a couple of white supremacists around here
who are for sure broken hearted, truth is that this could not come in
a worst moment --the World Cup being so near and the world's attention
focused on South Africa.

How do you think this will impact the attendance of fans? Do you think
security will be a concern, with the atmosphere so tense as it may be?
Latest business estimations, millions of dollars were expected to pour in
and, boy, they are needed.

Moreover, do you think FIFA should cancel such an important event,
economically and politically speaking?

I am worried about football.

South Africa must've been up a creek if they'd called Eugene Terreblanche into their squad. I had no idea.

Is that his real name? "Terreblanche" means "white Earth" - quite a suitable name for a white supremacist.

People, people, focus.

World is a better place without the pig. The point, though, is
not that one but something more important: how will this
affect the greatest football event?

South Africans' opinion about the likely aftermath is highly
appreciated, e.g. do you foresee levels of social tension
which may impact stadium attendance, hotel occupancy
rates, etc.?

Zuma sounds quite worried.

Then again, how worried can a man with 17 wives be?

The situation was bad long before Terreblanche was killed. This is just a minor thing that is highlighting the ridiculous nature of a certain branch (ANC Youth League) of the governing political party who are making comments about how AWESOME it is to kill white people. Terreblanche's supporters are minuscule, they're a minority within a minority within a minority. Zuma appealing for calm from this tiny group is just spin, trying to present the idea that there's any real danger from them and that they're dangerous people.

Anyway, world cup.

There are problems ranging from infrastructure to transportation to good old fashioned corruption. I'm probably a really bad South African for saying this, but I wouldn't recommend to my friends to come here for the Cup. Rather come over when things aren't so crazy. Summertime is good. Come to Cape Town in summer and have a fantastic and safe holiday on the beach. I've always felt completely safe when walking the streets of Cape Town even at 3am after a night out.

For now, stay home and watch the World Cup on your television.

Common sense. Thanks, dude.

I am sorry to hear that the spillover effect won't be that much
because of the fans staying at home, though --if they do. SA is
in need for fresh money pouring in.

As for the footie, emptier stadiums or a tense atmosphere
will definitely affect the entertainment. I am also very sorry
to hear that as well, damn it.

I don't even know how this made the news.
Some idiot white supremacist gets beaten to death because he doesn't pay the black people who work on his farm.

Goo riddance to bad rubbish.

This will not impact on the WC at all.

Like hoppy said, public transportation will be the biggest problem, and probably petty crime too. SA isn't a 'dangerous place' like some people make it out to be - but like most countries, there are places you don't go to alone after dark...

I say come, just make sure you have a local and trustworthy guide and you will enjoy yourself immensely.

The WC in SA will be one of the biggest commercial flops of all time.
Suporters were already staying away because of the threat of localised violence and gang culture - and I now hear that even some of the major sponsors are sending back their 'freebie' tickets!
More than 1/3rd of the tickets available are still going begging - it sounds to me like the only supporters in some of these stadiums will be those unbearable bugle blowers that blighted the Confederations Cup last year.
Hiked up prices of air fares and hotel rooms, not to mention the fact that SA doesn't have enough hotels to accomodate a WC have also put supporters off traveling.
A recent estimate for an England fan to travel was 10k....!!!!
Has anyone told the organisers that there's a global credit crunch going on?

This WC will be a joke.

Sorry folks.

Great post! We need more input from the likes of you! [/sarcasm]

Don't you think a poorer continent, and especially Sub-Saharan African people, should also get the chance to go see some WC games live, which almost none can afford when the competition is played anywhere else?

Or is global football only counted as Europe, plus a few other countries in your world?

Has there been one WC where no foreign supporters were mugged? Localised violence my ass.
And gang culture? Where do you get this BS? We have our fair share of violent crime, but just generally swatching "gang culture" across the biggest African economy is a little disingenuous and a lot of uninformed claptrap.

SA has more than enough accommodation. Maybe not just hotels, but we have bucketloads of guesthouses and B&Bs.

You are a joke.

My BS information comes from one of your countrymen actually!
He was born and brought up in Durban and lived in SA for 40 years before moving to England 5 years ago....

Maybe he's a liar eh?

i think giving SA the WC was a bad idea in the 1st place TBH but the world is PC mad now.

However the fact your friend was born in SA and now lives in England- also tells me his views are not 100% realiable. He left SA for a reason; he is not going to paint a good picture of the country now is he?
