Just wanted to hear other people's stories of how they escaped
from the clutches of religion, any religion they escaped from.
I myself was fortunate to have grandmother, pentacostal, telling me
when I was 8 when I was in a Lutheran school, if I wasn't baptized
in the pentacostal way (whole body dunking), I would be damned to
hell because I was only tinkled with water in the Catholic/Lutheran
tradition. That alone told me the whole system was crazy and
I sincerely thanked my grandmother for showing me the light.

What light did she show you, that people will nit pick at anything?
You think that means that all other stuff she thought was truth had
to be false then?

My Mother is a Pentecostal Christian and she is a very level-headed and loving woman. I saw some real crazies go in and out of that church when I was young but the majority of the people there were normal people like you and I (the whole speaking in tongues thing aside, LOL).

And even though I have such a religious mother, I was able to use my own critical thinking and life experiences to decide that Christianity was not for me.

You think that wise do you? Do you hold yourself and all others to
the same standards?

When I was a kid, a very nice Catholic woman told me that although I was welcome to be friends with her son, I would never get to Heaven unless I became a Catholic. Not to worry, she told me, if I didn't convert there was another place for me, not Hell, but like a suburb of Heaven, I think she meant Purgatory.
It struck me then that the whole thing was just a made-up story.
Thank you Catholic lady.

Making a choice that Christianity isn't for you is not the same thing
as thinking all of it is bad because of someone's view about how
much water one should be baptized with.

I just took a morality test that revealed my particular quadrant was
"Subjectivist" meaning I take each case as it comes, I don't make
rules that apply to everyone. Interesting test.

I thought it was obvious that I was trying to show sonhouse that not all Pentecostals are morons like his Grandmother. Perhaps I'll try and be less subtle next time...

Lol! I did have some experience with the speaking in tongue thing.
Saw it happen at our local pentacostal church, I think I was maybe 9.
Decades later I brought up the subject with aforementioned
grandmother, I said yeah, they were rolling in the Isles, frothing at
the mouth, speaking in tongues. She held herself up to her full
height, full of dignity, and said "They were NOT frothing at the mouth".

If I understood your first point, you rejected everything on the basis
of how much water she thought was proper to be used. Now, if you
apply the same type of standard to everyone, one error made by
someone within science, than all of sciece must be rejected, because
well....hey ....
People screw up, make errors get dumb things stuck in their brains
and so on. That does not mean that everything besides that dumb
error or stupid thing needs to be pitched.

Heck, if that was the only fault I found with religion, I would
be on a pulpit fighting for it. That wasn't the straw that broke the
camel's back by any means. That incident just showed me you can't
take people at face value and have since found so much wrong with
religion/s I would give anything for the human race to mature
itself out of the need for such crutches.
