Doesn't it say in the bible that Jesus is descended from Abraham?

Yes, it doesn't. In the first chapter of the New Testament.

Thought so. But Mary was a virgin, right?

What is this - day one in sunday school? Yes, Mary was a virgin.

If you read the begats in Matthew 1 - they connect Abraham with Joseph, Jesus' father -- not Mary.

Not sure if that information is of any use to you, but there you go.

Sure, but it starts with "Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham". Does Matthew say Mary was a virgin?

I hope you realize this is tantamount to asking whether Bilbo was Frodo's unlce or cousin - it's all made up.

I would have thought that it would have to have been based in fact.

Is there a point to be made from all these questions? If not, I'll take my leave now.

Considering the following options:

1) God created man in his image, and willed that an accurate record of God's works be created by the hand of man.

2) Several different men, at different times and in different places, created God in man's image, and cobbled together several books in order to support tales of God's works as described by powerful men of the times.

Which seems more feasible to you?

Oh sure, (2) no doubt, but still it seems there's likely to be a certain amount of garbled history in the thing, don't you think?

I came in here expecting a Maury Povich-like paternity test thread and instead got this.

"Abraham, you are NOT the great grandfather."
A: Whew. Told ya, byatch.
"Holy Spirit, you ARE the father!"
HS: Aww damn, now I gotta ask God to up my allowance so I can pay child support. 😞

I'm interested to hear the views of serious bible-believers on this subject. I doubt you are one of those but thanks for your valued insights.
