Is killing me. I don't think I can make it; I've barely made it one weekend.

Heck, I couldn't make 5 hours! Does god want you in a coma? Are there no exceptions for the young, old, and/or weak?

What if you live near one of the poles and get really long days? (or nights?)

then depending upon when it falls you either get an easy life (long nights), or you will have a real rough ride (long days). in Scotland we have this phenomena. in summer it is light up until eleven o'clock at night, in winter it becomes really dark at 3.30 in the afternoon.

this is one of the aspects of Islam in that it reflects in its Holy books and practises , Arabic culture with an Arabic vision. Some claim that its tenets are universal, but i don't think that it is so simple.

The same question could be asked of the fasting over Lent.

it cleanses persons of in toxins that may have built up over time, it lets them feel what it is like to be hungry thus fomenting charity, it fulfils a religious vow.

its a great practice for people of all faiths for those very reasons. I have fasted as long as 5 days without solid food ( I drank 4 meal replacement drinks a day). it puts yer blessings in perspective for sure.

Yeah I have read much different literature about fasting, and read many positive, cleansing type things about it. I'm sure it couldn't hurt for the spiritual aspirant.
Its not for me though.

many people, due to health reasons, will skip a meal at mid-day and use that time for reflection or meditation instead.
