"Middle Way" is simply refraining from taking up any speculative and/ or dogmatic thesis definable in terms of dichotomizing (dualist) conceptual thinking polarized into binary (positive/ negative, sameness/ otherness, identity/ difference etc. etc.) or quaternary (positive, negative, positive-and negative, neither-positive-nor- negative = tetralemma = catuskoti) sets of constructs and from postulating any absolutely real entity (bhava) in terms of these positions.
In this context, "Middle Way" is (Madhyamaka-grounded) Zen.
Well, Zen does not propound any thesis in support of such views.

Robert Pirsig published 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' in the early 70s. The title is clearly informed by the earlier book, although it's really more of a novel, with an autobiographical flavour. Both of these books are informative and worth reading.
Following Pirsig's successful publication, a number of other authors used the same naming format to hopefully emulate his sales. I am not aware of any books of remotely comparable value that transpired from this inspiration.
