is there a god?
As usual, I listened to the Christian radio station on my way home from work today. The local radio guy was doing a phone interview of Lee Strobel. As some here may know, Strobel is perhaps the most vocal Christian apologist in America.
Strobel was an atheist at one time. His wife converted to Christianity. Strobel says he looked at the evidence for atheism and Christianity very closely, and decided that the evidence for the latter won hands-down.
The host asked Strobel if he could be converted back to atheism if someone were to present him with good enough evidence for it. Strobel's answer was about like this: "If there was some sort of evidence for atheism that was really strong, and somehow it had slipped by me back in those days when I was searching, then I would find it interesting, but it would not make me cease to be a Christian. Imagine someone presenting me with evidence that my wife does not exist. I would listen to the evidence, but there is no way that I would be convinced, because I see her every day and I
know she exists. Likewise, I became born-again twenty years ago, and ever since then I have had a personal relationship with Christ. There is nothing that could convince me he's not for real."
I found it interesting that Strobel's last words on the program were used to request that people pray for him because he is going to have surgery for a knee injury tomorrow. Is his self-professed relationship with God so shaky that he cannot get God to ensure the success of the surgery with a prayer of his own, directly to God? Why does he have to recruit other believers to join him in asking God for that?
For that matter, there are Christians who believe in faith healing. Evidently Strobel is not one of them. Otherwise, Strobel would ask God for supernatural healing of his knee. Such healing would be 100 percent effective, versus 90 percent effective or thereabouts for surgery, and it would not cost Strobel's insurance company any money. Talk about a win-win alternative!
