From London region it's about 30 degree up in an Easterly direction. It's bloody huge. (edit that was about 2 hrs ago)

Anyone enlighten as to what it is please?

I don't think so Mars never looks that big and is usually red tinted. do you have detail? This was bigger than even Venus appears at times. I've seen Jupiter looking very large a few years ago. This was about the size the space station looks when it goes overhead - but it wasn't that.

I doubt you will get an answer unless you can at least say which constellation it was in. Next time see if you can get a photo of it.

Most people seem to think it's Venus.

Venus doesn't ever show in the east at the evening.
It can't be Venus.

Besides that, Venus is never red.

The star is probably Jupiter.

If you want to be 100% sure look again at september 2 when it gets dark. The "star" just below the moon and a little bit to the right is Jupiter.

As I said, Venus is not visible in east at evening. Venus is out of the question. Trust me.

Sorry, I don't see the problem. diveggester reported seeing an evening star and I replied that it was probably Jupiter. flyUnity reported seeing a star at 4AM and I said that was Venus.

I say you cannot see Venus in the evening in the east.
Are we talking about a different object?
