This exercise will test your ability to think quickly. You will be asked a series of simple mathematical sums, followed by a verbal question.

You are to mentally answer each sum in succession before proceeding to the next sum. Finally, you are to answer the final question with the first answer that pops into your mind. Do not stop to consider. According to your answer, you will either be part of 98% of the population or part of 2% of the population.

Just answer each sum as quickly as possible. You do not need to write or remember the answers.

Did you come up with red hammer?

If this is not your answer, then you are among 2% of the population that did not do so. 98% of the population would think of a red hammer while doing this exercise. I doubt the veracity of the statistics, but the division is severely skewed.

A spanner is is a tool to undo a bolt from a " nut and bolt".

Anyone one know how this works - I am in the N sea on a boat and have tried it with several people today most have the red hammer - though so far those for whom English is a second language have come up with other tools - red pliers for example - interesting that they were red though!

I guess you don't know Ivan Kutchakokoff. He
was a gentleman from Russia who used to post
in the Debates forum. If you go back and read
his posts, you may envision him being the type
that carries around a big red hammer and sicle.

Two nations divided by a common language--I suppose a spanner IS a wrench.

Certainly in the Uk a wrench is not the same as a spanner though it can be used for the same job - generally wrenches are adjustable whereas spanners are specic sizes you can also have ring spanners as well as normal spanners.
