Having two or more lines helps in keeping the action going if one line turns into a dead end.

I suppose the two lines can cross. Two lines were created when two people made two different words from the same word. It was an unintentional divergence, but I like to think of it as a tree with branches, and the branches can branch off into other... branches.
If someone changes PORT into something other than SPORT then we'll have sprouted a new branch.
