Second try: a nice walk on a sunny day

1. Ke1 [making way for Ncd2#] Re7+
2. Kf1 [threatening Na3# now too] g2+
3. Kg1 Re1+
4. Kxg2 Nf4+ [4. ... Nh4+ 5. Kf2 Rf2+ 6. Kf1 Re1+ 7. Kxe1 Nf3+/Ng2+ 8. Kf2 with 9. Na3# is similar]
5. Kf2 Re2+ [5. ... Nh3+ 6. Kxe1]
6. Kf1 Rf2+
7. Kxf2 Nh3+
8. Ke1/Kf1/Kg3/Ke3 with
9. Na3 or Ncd2 mate.

The idea here is correct now, I think, but the execution perhaps slightly erroneous.

Yes, the 9-move line looked like a sound forced mate to me.

Technically, I don't need to give the stipulation, because the thread asks for the best white move, not the only winning one. However, a composition is better understood with the proper stipulation. The stipulation for this one is Mate in 7.

1.Rxe6 looks good. 1...fxe6 loses to 2.Qg6+ and 3.Qh7# so 1...Nxe6 is forced. Then after 2.Nf5+ Kg8 3.Nxh6+ Kg7 4.Nf5+ Kg8 5.Nxe7+ Kg7 6.Qh7+ Kf6, there must be a mate somewhere though I haven't found it yet. Regardless, white can get the exchange back and another pawn and probably more.

The main point is the Rxe6, after which Black can resign. I don't think there is an immediate mate from there (but I stand corrected)
