I read that the Panov Botvinnik Attack is the best way to play against the Caro Kann.

Not a fair evaluation. Black's 5th move should be either ...Nc6 or ...e6
These lines are hard to crack in the Panov attack.

The Advance Variation is said to score better at the top level. I'm going to give it a bash - the Bronstein-Larsen is too drawish for my liking.

Game 1687059 TNG's a Caro player. In my other game with him we were heading down the exact same line, so I varied a little - now he's got threats.

This is my BEST game against the Advance Variation!! I have a screaming fit when I see 3.e5.

Yup yup, drawish and that's what I hate especially if your trying to win with white. I'm trying to learn the advanced.

Panov-botvinnik is my preferred line against the Caro.

Yes the Advanced variation is back in favour at top level, but not being a grandmaster, I don't see that as being particularly relevant.

I recommend Jacob Aagard's book on it - he talks about the pawn structures white should be aiming for and common themes and tactical tricks.

He also gives the book line that leads to an endgame with a small plus to white - fine if you are a strong endgame player, which I'm not.

different point of view:

CK players love an endgame. Not too many complications, a solid game, and yes, CK often gives black an equal and even a better endgame. Next the CK masochists (thats a compliment!) have fun in a 90 move endgame to slowly push you over the board.

The answer to your question: With the above in mind, make a mess of it. Sacrifice a pawn, make things complicated, tactical, slippery, impossible.........so ONE BIG MESS !

One could consider the 2K variation, but no guarantee. How about 2 b4 or so. The more mess the better, for thats the type of play CK guys dislike. And guess what....if your opponent does not feel comfortable in a type of position you have a good chance to beat him. (or her)

I'll check out the advanced for now and see how that goes. Sort of like a french but with there bishop outside the pawn chain.
