Tactical pattern recognition is obviously important. Time controls and opening choice are no less important as well.

Blitz is about knowing your stuff and a good state of mind. You can't try to refute the kings gambit in a 3 minute game. Also, being a good blitz player is about letting your mistakes go and try to find the positive in the position. If you drop a pawn or piece you have to let it go and keep playing. I've lost many a pieces on rhp blitz and came back to win more then my fair share of them.

Cleary if good players (at long time controls) were not good at Blitz -- Blitz titles would probably be won by complete unknowns.

if you notice, Blitz champions also tend to well established and strong players at long classical controls -- suggesting to me a strong corelation.

It depends what is "good" for you. All GMs would be able to defeat patzers in blitz, but i know many strong candidates of master and IMs playing blitz no worse GMs.

Good blitz players are not necessarily good players at different speeds, though they are generally competent. Slower players require an ability for deeper analysis, whereas blitz players need tactical instinct and more need of an ability to utilize time (both need this though).

Having fast hand is the most important thing in 1min blitz. Your hand's speed should exceed 100mph when hitting the clock.

There's a new little book called "Blitz Theory: How to Win at Blitz Chess" by Jonathan Maxwell. It's surprisingly good. I recommend it.

Try to complicate the position for your opponent at all costs. Try to keep your moves easy and theirs hard and then you can exploit time troubles. For example this game I recently played vs. a 2000+ player.
The time controls were 3 min. All I did was make him think and he eventually timed out (while I still had 30 seconds left).

here is a little known tip about blitz chess - try and chose plans that involve 'short' moves.
What I mean by a short move is that, if you were in a rook endgame and you wanted to play your rook from e1 to e8 - why not play it to e2, e3, e4 ect (assuming) as you will both likely be short of time in the endgame and this buys you valuable seconds to finish the opponant off with.
