I’ve picked up a book ‘The Flanders Panel’ which has a retrograde puzzle inside.


What was Black’s last move? Solve that and you solve a murder.

In one of the puzzles you have to find a Rook mate, a Knight mate and a Bishop mate.


Black to play. Look for checkmates in two moves.

I found out why it had to be a Knight 🙂

The missing bishop was black
The c-pawn is still on the board, as are the b and d-pawns (the latter on c6 after taking).
