I've been playing against e4, Nf3 alot lately and I was wondering if any of you RHPers have had any success with the following second moves as Black against this opening: 2...Nf6, e6, b6, and g6.

I'd really like to start playing some new lines other than the Najdorf and Orthodox. Does anyone have any comments on these responses (especially Nf6 and b6) and any examples of games that might be worth looking at?

It looks like Nf6 will usually transpose into Alekhine's D, which I think is good Black against someone that is was ready and prepared for a traditional Sicilian battle. From the little research I've done this morning, b6 is much weaker and White can cause trouble with Bb5 and create a Queenside attack unles Black wastes an early tempo on a6.

I would suggest 2...e6

2...Nf6 is an older variation, I think their are a few games with it in there, and I don't think it transposes to the Alekhine Defense because black has played 2...c5 already which should benefit him. I think it's quite playable and will generally confuse the hell out of white.

2... e6 is a very solid response by Black, which I use almost exclusively. From it you can go into the Taimanov or the Kan, of which I prefer the latter.

2... Nf6 is Nimzovich variation if I'm not mistaken, certainly playable for black.

I'm playing in a tourney this Saturday and am almost certain that I'll have at least once chance to play against e4 Nf3. I know that e6 is probably the most solid out of the responses that I mentioned earlier but I'm leading toward 2...Nf6. Anyone care to provide some brief analysis on how White might proceed against this move. I'm going to look now and will follow up a little later...

Personally, I've played the dragon variation and had success with it, white usually does good, following the book into the yugoslav attack but I find that I can usually grind it out into a winnable endgame. Maybe its just that I've never faced a proper attack, I'm not sure, I don't play it exclusively.

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Be3 Bg7

A typical continuation might be:

3. e5 Nd5 4. Nc3 e6 5. NxN exN 6. d4 Nc6 7. dxc Bxc 8. Qxd Qb6 with attacking chances for both Black and White.

It will definitely through your opponent out of any lines he's memorized in the Sicilian, and give you a psychological edge early on.
